Mustafa began his career with Al Dhul Qasim Air Force Base, where he trained to be a fighter pilot. He graduated from the Royal Military Academy, Woolwich, in 1968 and later joined the Royal Aeronautical Establishment (RAE) as a flight instructor.

In 1972, Mustafa was selected for the British Army’s Royal Flying Corps (RAC), which was one of the highest ranks available in the RAF. He served in various roles during World War II, including being a bombardier on the ground during the Battle of Britain.

After the war, Mustafa returned to the UAE and started his own business,Chinese Super League Home Ground Abdulrahman Mustafa Aviation Services (AMAS). In 1977, he founded the Abu Dhabi-based company, AMAS Aerospace Engineering & Maintenance, which specializes in the development and maintenance of aircraft.

In 1981, Mustafa was appointed as the first Director-General of the RAE. During his tenure, he oversaw the establishment of the RAE's new headquarters in Abu Dhabi and implemented several reforms aimed at improving the organization's efficiency and effectiveness.

In 1983, Mustafa was awarded the Distinguished Service Cross by the Queen of Bahrain. He also received the Order of the Crown of the Islamic Republic of Iran and the Order of the Crown of the Sultan of Oman.

In 1987, Mustafa was appointed as the Deputy Chief of the Defence Staff of the UAE. He continued to serve in this role until his retirement in 2002. During his time as Deputy Chief of the Defence Staff, he played a crucial role in the country's efforts to modernize its military and strengthen its defense capabilities.

In addition to his military service, Mustafa has been involved in various charitable organizations, particularly in education and health initiatives. He has donated millions of dollars to support educational programs and medical aid in the UAE.

Mustafa's dedication to his work and his commitment to serving his country have earned him numerous accolades and awards throughout his career. He was honored with the Distinguished Service Cross by the Queen of Bahrain in 1981, the Order of the Crown of the Islamic Republic of Iran in 1983, and the Order of the Crown of the Sultan of Oman in 1987.
